A Holiday Cruise On The Wessex Rose – Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book?
That’s simple, just click on the cruises page on this web site, check availability and then follow the booking instructions.

How will I find the Wessex Rose?
Once the balance of your cruise is paid we will send you full joining instructions which will include the address and exact directions to our moorings, recommended travel routes, station details and parking recommendations. We will also provide you with a phone number in case you need further information en-route.

What time should I arrive?
Your room will be ready from 4pm although if you arrive earlier you are welcome to leave your bags with us while you explore the local area.

What shall I bring to wear?
A cruise aboard the Wessex Rose is informal so dress as you wish for comfort. On board, the boat is warmed by under floor heating so you will be comfortable in normal leisure clothing but you may need some warm clothing for sitting or strolling outside in the evenings and as the English weather can be unpredictable, waterproofs may also be a wise precaution. Inside we ask that you please avoid wearing high heel shoes, which may damage the wooden floor, but feel free to wear any comfortable shoes or slippers. For outdoor areas of the boat we recommend non slip shoes or sandals and remember that the tow path can be muddy in wet weather.

Can I bring a suitcase?
We would appreciate if you could pack in either small suitcases and/or soft travel bags so they can be easily stowed. As you will appreciate storage space is limited for bulky hard suitcases. If you are arriving by car you will be able to drop off your bags at the Wessex Rose before parking.

What is the food like?
All meals are freshly prepared and we plan a varied and high quality menu using the best locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. The nature of cruising means we offer a fixed menu which we hope will appeal to everyone but if you have any specific foods that you can’t or prefer not to eat or have any specific dietary requirements please advise us and we cater to your needs.

Can I smoke anywhere?
We are sorry but for the comfort of everyone the whole of the Wessex Rose, including the outside areas, are no smoking areas. You are of course free to smoke on the tow path and moorings.

Our cruise is for a special occasion what should I do?
Nothing, just tell us what the occasion is and we will do the rest!

Is the Wessex Rose suitable for disabled visitors?
Whilst we welcome all visitors we regret that the Wessex Rose does not have suitable wheelchair access. Please also bear in mind that there are a number of steps from the rear deck down into the cabin of the boat and up onto the Sun Deck, and getting on and off the boat requires stepping on to/off the rear deck from/to the canal bank.

Do I need to bring toiletries?
As part of our environmental policy we provide eco-friendly ethical shower gel, shampoo and hand soap in your cabin.

Can I stay for more than one cruise?
You are welcome to stay as long as you like. We offer a discount for bookings of two or more consecutive cruises. Please contact us for details.

What are the bedrooms like?
All three guest cabins on the Wessex Rose are fully en-suite and have under floor heating with individual thermostats in each room. Furnishings include wardrobe, drawers, shelves and dressing table area with illuminated mirror and stool and the rooms can be configured to provide a full size double bed or twin beds with medium to firm sprung mattresses. Each cabin is equipped with a full set of bedding, luxury linen, towels, robes and slippers, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities and satellite TV & DVD.

Can I check my e-mails on board?
Yes we have Wi-Fi throughout the boat and you are welcome to use our computer if you wish.

Can I get involved?
With pleasure! Part of the Wessex Rose experience can be helping with the running of the boat and understanding how things work along the canal. It’s a great way enjoy the canal and soak up the history and heritage. We will give you full instructions including a safety brief and then show you how to pilot the boat, work locks, open bridges, moor and cast off, the list is endless and it’s a great way to guarantee a good night’s sleep!
