Berkhamsted-Boxmoor-Tring-Berkhamsted (5 nights) Saturday 7 August 2021

Join the Wessex Rose for a five night cruise exploring the Grand Union Canal as it winds through the heart of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Berkhamsted is a vibrant cultural town with an attractive canalscape and is renowned for being the birthplace of numerous historical figures including the author Graham Greene and close to the canal are the remains of an 11th Century Norman castle where William the Conqueror received the English crown after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The town is also home to a genuine Canadian totem poles which overlooks the Grand Union Canal at the site of a former timber yard and can be seen on the offside bank as we depart Berkhamsted at the beginning of our cruise.

Cruising away from the town to the east, the urban scenery soon gives way to scenic rural landscapes as we make our way through steadily down through twelve locks to our turning point at the pretty sought after village of Boxmoor near Hemel Hempstead, The village common is the final resting place of Robert Snooks,  who in 1802 became the last man in England to be hung for highway robbery and his grave here is marked by two stones erected by the Boxmoor Trust.

Having turned at Boxmoor, we navigate our way back towards Berkhamsted passing through the tiny hamlet of Winkwell with it’s attractive and very popular 16th century pub, the Three Horsehoes.

Cruising on through Berkhamsted the canal climbs steadily through Northchurch, Dudswell and the hamlet of Cowroast, where a passage through Cowroast Lock takes us up on to the Tring summit. Extending for three miles from Cowroast, the summit leads us through the tree lined Tring Cutting to the village of Bulbourne. At Bulbourne Junction the Wendover Arm, still under restoration, leads away towards Wendover as the main line descends the Marsworth flight of seven locks to Marsworth Junction.

Leaving the Marsworth flight for another day, we turn at Bulbourne Junction and retrace our steps to Cowroast Lock to begin our descent from the summit. Six more locks, among them the quaintly named ‘Crooked Billet Lock’ and ‘Old Ned’s Lock’, return us to our starting point at Berkhamsted.

The town and its attractions are well worth a visit and we aim to arrive in good time to allow guests the chance to explore before spending their final night on board.
