Bristol to Stratford-upon-Avon (7 nights) Saturday 27 May 2023
Come join us on a 7-night, 8-day cruise starting at Bristol Baltic Wharf and ending at Stratford-upon-Avon. Our journey will take us through the beautiful waterways of the UK, with overnight stops at places like Portishead, Sharpness Barge Arm, Tewkesbury and our final evening at Stratford.
As we depart from Bristol Baltic Wharf, we enter the River Avon on our way to Portishead, where you will have the opportunity to explore this charming coastal town and take in the stunning views of the Bristol Channel.
From Portishead, we will make our way to Sharpness Lock. Our journey takes us on to the exciting River Severn. The mighty River Severn is Britain’s longest river. It runs for 220 miles from the Welsh mountains, through the beautiful Shropshire and Worcestershire countryside and down to the flatlands of the Severn estuary. We will have the assistance of a pilot to ensure our safe passage up the river.
The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal was once the broadest and deepest in the world. Even today, it stands out from other navigations because of its sheer scale and impressive engineering.
We will then continue on to Tewkesbury known for its unique location at the junction – or confluence – of two rivers. The picturesque River Avon, often referred to as ‘Shakespeare’s Avon’ and the mighty River Severn. Perhaps most famous for its mustard, Shakespeare’s Falstaff has the line ‘Wit as thick as Tewkesbury mustard’, other major industries over the years in Tewkesbury include brewing and malting, pin making and the framework knitting of stockings. With the rivers to transport goods in and out of the town, Tewkesbury was a thriving commercial hub. One of the town’s entrances over the River Severn is the impressive Mythe Bridge designed by Thomas Telford. A cast iron structure with a 170-foot span, the bridge opened to traffic in 1826.
We will end our journey at Stratford-upon-Avon, best known for being the birthplace of the greatest English playwright, William Shakespeare, where we will spend our final evening enjoying the sights this charming town.
