Henley to Newbury (5 nights) Wednesday 02 October 2019

Wessex Rose Pewsey to Newbury

Town Bridge in the centre of Newbury

Join the Wessex Rose for a delightful five night cruise from the beautiful historic town of Henley on Thames, most famous for holding the world’s greatest rowing regatta, to the heart of Royal Berkshire.  Henley is a 12th century market town on the banks of the Thames, a charming town with over 300 buildings designated as being of special architectural or historical interest and well worth a visit before joining the boat for your cruise.

The Thames between Henley and Caversham, where we leave the Thames, offers a wealth of stunning scenery, wildlife, historic buildings and impressive waterway architecture, with much to see and appreciate throughout the cruise. For the avid walker, the Thames Path follows the river for much of the route, so cruisers wishing to experience part of the route from the shore can stretch their legs between stops without losing sight of the boat.

Leaving Henley we follow the river upstream skirting Wargrave on the East bank and Shiplake with its splendid college building set into the hillside on the West as we head towards Sonning, a pretty village which straddles the Thames with the help of an attractive 18th century bridge and has its own theatre housed in the former Sonning Mill on an island close to the lock.

We leave the Thames near Reading at its junction with the Kennet, and head upstream through an increasingly urban canal scape to cruise through the centre of The Oracle, the town’s main shopping centre. From here the scenery quickly turns rural again as the navigation winds its way through the outskirts of the town to meet open countryside. Our onward journey follows the easternmost stretch of the Kennet and Avon navigation as it winds West towards our destination at Newbury. Joined frequently by the River Kennet, this pleasant rural route is bounded by scenic countryside, water meadows and nature reserves and numerous picturesque hamlets and villages. The frequent locks on this stretch include two unusual scallop sided locks, and the only two remaining turf-sided locks in the country. One of these, curiously named Monkey Marsh Lock, is an English Heritage scheduled ancient monument.

Arriving at Newbury we head for the West Mills area where a row of pretty whitewashed 17th century cottages and a tastefully converted former silo form an attractive canal scape and pleasant place to moor. We aim to arrive in good time to allow guests time to explore the town before spending the final night on board.
