Oxford to Newbury (7 nights) Monday 10 September 2018

Wessex Rose Pewsey to Newbury

Town Bridge in the centre of Newbury

From the city renowned for its ‘dreaming spires’ to the heart of Royal Berkshire, this seven night cruise takes you on a tranquil journey along the River Thames and Kennet & Avon navigation.

The Thames between Oxford and Reading offers a wealth of stunning scenery, wildlife, historic buildings and impressive waterway architecture, with much to see and appreciate throughout the cruise. For the avid walker, the Thames Path follows the river along the length of our cruise, so cruisers wishing to experience part of the route from the shore can stretch their legs between stops without losing sight of the boat.

Leaving Oxford, we follow the river as it winds gently through scenic open countryside to the pleasant and historic town of Abingdon, reputedly the oldest town in the country with a rich collection of ancient buildings and well worth exploring. Continuing downstream, we cruise close to the small historic town of Dorchester which boasts an impressive Abbey dating from AD 635, and at the charming ancient market town of Wallingford, more recently famous for being the location of Causton in the TV series Midsomer Murders, the river passes under a magnificent 22 arch medieval bridge which connects the town to Crowmarsh Gifford on the opposite bank.

Heading south we cruise through the Goring Gap, recognised as one of the most beautiful stretches of the Thames and home to the charming village of Goring-on-Thames nestling on the river’s east bank,  before continuing around the southern reaches of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the pleasant National Trust river meadows at Pangbourne.

Approaching Reading where we join the Kennet and Avon navigation we pass Mapledurham House at Purley, thought to have inspired E H Shepherd’s illustrations of Toad Hall along with its 15th Century Watermill which is still working and producing flour.

We leave the Thames near Reading at its junction with the Kennet, and head upstream through an increasingly urban canal scape to cruise through the centre of The Oracle, the town’s main shopping centre. From here the scenery quickly turns rural again as the navigation winds its way through the outskirts of the town to meet open countryside. Our onward journey follows the easternmost stretch of the Kennet and Avon navigation as it winds West towards our destination at Newbury. Joined frequently by the River Kennet, this pleasant rural route is bounded by scenic countryside, water meadows and nature reserves and numerous picturesque hamlets and villages. The frequent locks on this stretch include two unusual scallop sided locks, and the only two remaining turf-sided locks in the country. One of these, curiously named Monkey Marsh Lock, is an English Heritage scheduled ancient monument.

Arriving at Newbury we head for the West Mills area where a row of pretty whitewashed 17th century cottages and a tastefully converted former silo form an attractive canal scape and pleasant place to moor. We aim to arrive in good time to allow guests time to explore the town before spending the final night on board.
